Teams: Lowell Tigers | Cost: $10,400 |
Capacity: 3,500 |
Memorable Moments:
Al Winn bought the Tigers in 1906 and immediately constructed a ballpark closer to downtown Lowell. It was located on a small lot, so small, many balls hit off of the right field fence ended up as singles. There was a very modern drainage system, so it could rain right up until game time and the players could still take the field. 1,500 of the seats were opera house-style (with backs) and covered by a roof. In the ladies rest room there were mirrors, brushes, and combs. As mentioned above, the Cherokee Indians came to town with a portable lighting system of fifty electric arc lights creating 50,000 candlepower. When Winn was forced to sell the team in 1909, the new owners found it was cheaper to moved the team back to Spalding Park and repair its fire damage than to pay Winn $50 a game rent on his park.
