Memorable Moments:
This stadium was ok, at best. It is pretty much 100% aluminum except for the concourses that are concrete. There is zero covering. The concourse is at the top and you descend into a bowl to see the game. The concourse felt very temporary. The scoreboard is very basic, and I mean VERY.
In 1840, Father Fitton, for whom this field is named, purchased the land the park is located on in the name of the Catholic Church. He founded founded the seminary of Mount St. James. In 1843 he deeded the land to Bishop Benedict Joseph Fenwick who founded the College of the Holy Cross in 1843. Although Holy Cross started playing baseball in 1876, they did not use Fitton Field until 1905. 100 years later, Fitton Field has been renovated and welcomes a new tenant in addition to the Holy Cross Crusaders, the Worcester Tornadoes.
The CanAm League is developing a habit of using college baseball parks as sites of their games. This works out pretty well. College is out of session during the CanAm League season. Also it gives the College another source of revenue to help pay for the renovation. Other teams that have done this are the New Jersey Jackals, Bangor Lumberjacks, and New Haven County Cutters.
Currently Fitton Field is home to a summer collegiate team that uses wooden bats.
