This league was formed by some members of the Brotherhood of Base Ball Players as a form of defiance to the National League because of the reserve clause. The clause said that a team could reserve their players from year to year and force them to play for them or no one else. The players wanted basically to institute free agency and when the National League said no, they formed the Players League. That didn't workout, the league folded after one season.
