On May 16, 1985, ground was broken on the successor of Korakuen Stadium - the Tokyo Dome. It is built on the site of the Velodrome. It is a dome shaped structure and the roof is a flexible membrane, supported by air pressure, similar to Minneapolis' old Metrodome. It is the home field of Yomiuri Giants and the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame. In addition to baseball, the venue has hosted concerts, basketball, American football, association football, martial arts competitions and monster truck races.

Tokyo Dome is the centerpiece of Tokyo Dome City, all of which was built on the site of the former Tokyo Koishikawa arsenal. The City also contains an amusement park, shops, restaurants, arcades, a spa and an off track betting complex.
